700,000:1
Turf hill 36' in diameter x 2' high. Blue form hanging from ceiling same dimensions.
Turf hill 36' in diameter x 2' high. Blue form hanging from ceiling same dimensions.
View of grass turf floor and blue yarn ceiling fixture.
The ceiling fixture creates the exact same sphere-cap shape, inverted. (If either sphere continued, they would each be 1 mile in diameter).

700,000:1 (turf hill)
36' diameter hill
36' diameter hill
View of turf floor and 36' diameter hill. Hill raises to 2' at center.

700,000:1 (steps)
Sphere-cap hill showing special one-step-at-a-time staircase incised into the surface.

700,000:1 (steps)
Closeup of stair case. Each step accommodates one foot only. The stairs raise and lower incrementally over 18' span to 2' height at center. Participant must concentrate to coordinate movement up and down staircase.

700,000:1
If a viewer is watching a participant ascend or descend the stairs, because the participant is raising up the hill so slowly - the stairs are so shalllow and their feet are hidden below the surface of the sphere-cap - the participant will look to be almost floating to the top and then bottom of the form .

700,00:1 (blue hanging form)
frame = aluminum, blue = chenille yarn
36' diameter hanging form
frame = aluminum, blue = chenille yarn
36' diameter hanging form
The circular aluminum frame is mounted to the ceiling. Strung from end to end of the frame are lengths of blue chenille yarn, each length hanging side by side the next, each beginning and ending at the circular frame. Together, the separate lengths give the illusion of the surface of a sphere-cap. It is an exact replica, and inversion, of the turf sphere-cap on the floor.

700,000:1 (blue yarn)
polypropylene chenille yarn
polypropylene chenille yarn
Sample of chenille yarn side by side. Note the thick yarn width.

700,000:1
When a participant gets to the top of the grassy sphere-cap, they simultaneously get to the bottom of the blue sphere-cap. The participant's head parts the chenille yarn and is enveloped within the bottom of the blue sphere.
